The articles collected here share a time horizon rather than a subject. They are about decisions whose cost lands years after the commit — upgrade paths, governance that has to hold as headcount changes, and documentation written for the engineer who inherits the system rather than the one who built it.
It is the most uneven collection on the site, deliberately. Some pieces are ordinary operational engineering that happens to compound well; others are retrospectives on our own work, including one on auditing this catalogue and finding 342 defects in it. The common thread is a preference for the boring choice that is still explicable in five years over the clever one that needs its author present.
